Sat12Mar2016Anywhere & everywhere!
The first Disabled Access Day took place on 17th January 2015, an amazing 261 venues took part across 11 countries. Following on from the success of last year we are arranging the second event which will take place on 12th March 2016 and we hope it will be even bigger and better!
Disabled Access Day came about after Paul Ralph, a power chair user and Euan's Guide supporter, went to a ‘try it out day’ at his local bus company:
“Prior to this, I had not used the bus network in my hometown because I was unsure how the ramp operated, how ticketing worked and if my power chair would fit.
I attended a demonstration organised by the local bus company with the opportunity to explore a stationary bus. Extra staff were on hand to explain the process of getting on and off safely. There was ample time to become more familiar with the layout of the bus and with what you need to know as a wheelchair using passenger.
I’m now a frequent bus user.
Chatting with friends, I thought how great it would be if there were similar initiatives, including some more informal events, happening across the country on one specific day. The idea of encouraging disabled people to also try something new that day appeared and out of it came the idea of Disabled Access Day.”

Thu19May20166:00 pmArts for Health workshop, which is upstairs at the Kingston Library, Winchester Circle, MK10 0BA
You are invited to join us for the opening night of the One in Four exhibition at 6pm on Thursday 19th May at the Arts for Health workshop. In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Week 2016, Arts for Health (Milton Keynes) and Rethink Mental Illness have organised an art exhibition aimed at sharing information about mental illness and reducing the associated stigma. The exhibition will feature artwork by people affected by mental health problems, created in collaboration with artists Karen Raingold and Charlie Henry.
Karen Raingold’s collaboration used photography and collage to explore statistics, facts and stereotypes. The resulting work gives an insight in to how stress, anxiety and depression affects people as well as challenging some common perceptions.
Charlie Henry worked with the group to create boxes of calm, hidden treasures aimed at providing a mini sanctuary. As well as creating boxes of calm for display in the exhibition, the group have also produced as series of boxes which will be left in public spaces as gifts to anyone who finds them.
As well as a chance to see the artworks the opening night also offers a DJ set from PUL53WIDTH as well as poetry from the Repton House poetry group.
The exhibition will be open to the public 1pm – 4pm Friday 20 May and Saturday 21 May 2016.

Fri20May201610.00am-12.00pmMilton Keynes
“All Hands on Deck” – DAA Milton Keynes event 20 May 2016
On Friday 20 May between 10.00 and 12.00 during Dementia Awareness Week the DAA MK is arranging various awareness raising activities in locations around Milton Keynes. At 11.00 am the plan is to link hands and spend a few minutes remembering people we have known with dementia and their carers and sharing these memories with those whose hands we are holding. The event will use the strap line "All Hands On Deck".
The Alzheimer's Society All Hands on Deck Activity group is a vibrant group for people with dementia aged under 65. This strapline also encompasses "A Million Hands" partnership with the Scouts Association. A Million Hands offers Scouts four issues - including dementia - that they can choose between to work towards their Community Impact badge, as well as contributing to other badges and awards. We are hoping to involve the Scouts Association in the 20 May event both in preparation and on the day. Mark Lancaster MP, Iain Stewart MP and Steve Coventry MK Mayor are all supporting this event. It is hoped to make this an annual event during Dementia Awareness Week. The linking hands in The Centre MK is either going to take place in Queen's Court. It is hoped to involve as many retailers as possible in The Centre MK - John Lewis have started the ball rolling - along with other supporters, shoppers etc. It is envisaged that there will be some musical activity (Junction 14 (barbershop) and Singing for the Brain (Alzheimer's Society) volunteers) and 3-4 tables offering literature and support for:
Alzheimer's Society services Dementia Action Alliance Milton Keynes information (participant organisations can display materials) Dementia Friends information We are encouraging people to wear something in the colour blue - Forget-Me-Not - and there will be a supply of air filled blue Alzheimer's Society balloons where it is possible for these to be used . There will be similar hand holding events in the following locations: Intu - Oak Court (confirmed) - support from Intu Management and it is hoped retailers. Iain Stewart MP has confirmed his attendance. Kingston Centre - Outside Tesco (confirmed) - support from the Kingston Centre Manager and the Community Relations Manager at Tesco plus local retailers Interest has also been expressed by a number of other organisations in and around Milton Keynes, and it is hoped that where it is not possible for people to get to one of the main venues they will have an Awareness Raising activity in their place of work/community centre/leisure centre/sports ground/home/school/library.
A memory tree with branches or MDF tree-shaped board with blue labels or post-its to tie/stick on remembering by name a person affected by dementia is one idea which has been suggested.
As far as other volunteering is concerned, help on the day would be very much appreciated and any publicising of the event which you can do through your contact channels would be very much appreciated.
Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you have any queries. Mazzafish100@hotmail.com. You will realise that this is still a work in progress and any ideas for further promoting this event would be welcome.
Thank you in advance.

Did I Do That?
Over the past few years the word Dementia has been one that we hear more often, which is not surprising considering recent statistics state that around 800,000 people in the UK have dementia. The Art and Dementia programme at Arts for Health Milton Keynes is run in the belief that art can help override the stress and confusion of memory loss.
Featuring the work of people living with dementia, their carers and associate artists the exhibition Did I Do That?showcases artwork produced in our Arts and Dementia programme.
Did I Do That?does not explore dementia as a theme but rather presents an opportunity to showcase the work produced by people living with dementia. The exhibition demonstrates both the therapeutic benefits of creativity and the potential of people with dementia.
Alongside this work, the exhibition also includes work produced by our associate artists, exploring how community work can inform artistic practice.
This work has been supported by funding from MK Community Foundation

World Mental Health Day MK - Screening and Exhibition
Monday 10 October / 7pm / Free
A collaboration between Milton Keynes citizens with an interest in raising awareness and tackling stigma in relation to Mental Health.
Rocks in My Pockets (2014)
Dir. Signe Baumane / 88 mins
Rocks In My Pockets is a story of mystery and redemption. The film is based on true events involving five women of Signe Baumane's family, including herself, and their battles with depression and suicide. It raises questions of how much family genetics determine who we are and if it is possible to outsmart one's own DNA. The film is packed with visual metaphors, surreal images and a twisted sense of humour. It is an animated tale full of art, women, strange daring stories, Latvian accents, history, nature, adventure and more.

Alongside the screening, there will be a presentation of artworks created during workshops delivered by Arts for Health.

Welcome to the Autumn/Winter issue of Carers News – I hope you all had an enjoyable summer. We’ve had a busy few months here at Carers MK with the increasing numbers of carers getting in touch, the launch of our Carers Discount Card, Carers Week 2016, our summer activities for young carers, and continuing our work with GP surgeries - focusing on improving the health and wellbeing of carers in Milton Keynes. In this issue of Carers News, we take a look at some of the Money & Legal Matters affecting carers and focus on some of the questions which carers most frequently ask us, including how you apply for Carers Allowance and other benefits that carers can be entitled to. We also look at financial and legal issues including paying for care and information about Lasting Power of Attorney. As a carer it’s really important to understand the different benefits and financial support available and your legal rights. Carers MK is here to support you, and our team of dedicated support workers can help answer any questions you might have concerning financial or legal matters, and to point you in the right direction! As the winter on the draw nearer, we also take a look at staying healthy during winter - ensuring you look after yourself as well as the person you The front page image shows Carers MK Chief Executive Stephen Archibald, the Mayor of MK and a carer at Carers MK’s Carers Week event in June 2016. care for is vital, so that you are able to continue in your caring role. Carers are entitled to a free flu jab from their GP which will protect you and ensure you don’t pass flu onto the person you care for. On P.12, Nutritionist Nikki Brown from Heartfelt Nutrition talks about the sorts of foods our body and immune system needs to stay strong with the seasonal changes. Thu03Nov201609.15-16.30Bucks & Milton Keynes Disability Sport Summit Stoke Mandeville Stadium
Did you know that only 17.2% of disabled people take part in moderate physical activity once a week however seven in ten disabled people say they want to be more active. Showing that
more work is needed to ensure we have an active county for all.
Leap is the non-profit county organisation with responsibility for increasing levels of physical activity and sport. Funded by Sport England we are working with our partners, the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), the British Paralympic Association (BPA), WheelPower and event sponsor Slater & Gordon to co-ordinate the inaugural county-wide disability sports forum on Thursday 3rd November to help address these challenges.Aims from the summit are to:
make a difference to the lives of disabled people through sport and activity
establish a disability sport and activity forum to share best practice
attract national funding and
optimise our position as the birthplace of the Paralympics.
The summit welcomes you as someone working with or on behalf of disabled people, and through the summit we hope together we can enrich our knowledge about the benefits of sport and physical activity. Please be reassured that the focus of this summit is not about elite sport, but is about getting down to the grass roots level of sport for all
We would be delighted if you are able to join us, and help to create a disability legacy at county level to equal the recognition achieved through the Paralympics established here in Buckinghamshire.

Think Inside the Box
You are invited to join us for the opening of Think Inside the Box, 6.30pm on Thursday 24 November 2016 at the Arts for Health workshop, which is upstairs at the Kingston Library, Winchester Circle, MK10 0BA.
Having a mental health problem is often referred to as a hidden disability, and therefore it is difficult to detect from just looking at a person. Arts for Health (Milton Keynes) have teamed up with Rethink Mental Illness to present Think Inside the Box, an exhibition which aims to share information about mental illness and reduce the stigma which surrounds it. Collaborating with people affected by mental health problems, Think Inside the Box encourages us to look beyond initial appearance and the front that we put up, because how we look on the outside doesn’t always reflect how we’re really feeling on the inside.
The exhibition will be open to the public 1pm – 3pm Friday 26 November and 10am -1pm Saturday 27 November 2016.

Fri25Nov2016The Grand Union Canal, Old Wolverton
This year on the 25th November we will be holding a ticket only Charity auction and Masquerade ball to raise money and awareness for Willen Hospice as our way of saying thank you for the tremendous care and humility they provided whist our father was in there care.
Willen Hospice is a registered charity that provides specialist care for people whose illness no longer responds to curative treatment (also known as specialist palliative care). Willen Hospice provide care for people from the age of 18 years upwards and support Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas.
Willen Hospice provides services to three Primary Care Trusts - Milton Keynes, Bedfordshire & Northamptonshire. The Hospice is based at a quiet lakeside area close to the City Centre.
To continue to the care and service they provide, Willen Hospice must raise around £7 every minute from the local community
The care is free to those who need it but to continue to offer that care we need to raise around £3.6million every year.
The annual running costs of the Hospice is around £4.6 million - we're very grateful to have 22% of these costs met by the NHS. The remaining 78% needs to be raised from the local community and without the support, dedication and generosity of people just like you, Would your organisation be in a position to provide a gift for us to auction to raise the much needed funds, or in the very least point in the direction of who may be able to help. -
