    Take Your Head on Holiday’
Experience a virtual holiday using the power of hypnosis
    Wednesday 13th January 2021 @ 7pm

Amid the anxiety and grief of the pandemic, it might seem silly to focus on holidays. However, they undoubtedly play a huge role in our mental health and wellbeing. Holidays provide escapism from everyday life. The coping process of escapism is common to many people at difficult times in their lives. Escapism is key to our mental health self-care, and it can be good to seek a happy escape when things
seem impossible – that feeling of “I just need to get away”

So why not experience a Virtual Holiday using the power of hypnosis?

Would you like to feel relaxed, rejuvenated and refocussed?

Come along to this group hypnosis session where I will take you on a journey to a wonderful beach holiday destination.

When we create a hypnotic state, we can access the sub-conscious mind. The sub-conscious (your imagination) doesn’t know the difference between
    real and imagined.

The body and mind respond to suggestions given and to what you are imagining! When you imagine it, you FEEL it!

We will go on a holiday journey and you will also be given suggestions that will benefit your health, wellbeing and your emotional state.

It’s only £10 and all the money will be donated to one of my favourite local charities, MK Centre for Integrated Living, who have helped so many people I’ve known over the years. MK CIL is an information centre which provides a very wide range of free and confidential information on any disability related issue for people with a disability, their families, carers, and anyone else with an interest
    in the field of disability.

Please contact me at sue@apaininthemind.co.uk if you would like to join the session and include your email address. I will arrange for you to receive an email with payment instructions and later the joining instructions to this session which will be held via Zoom.

There are so many great reasons to learn British Sign Language

Join our FREE taster session on Monday 12th April 6.30-7.30pm

    Sign Language taster session

Sign languages are visual languages that use hand, facial and body movements as a means of communication. There are over 135 different sign languages all around the world including American Sign Language (ASL), Australian Sign Language (Auslan) and British Sign Language (BSL). There are also signed representations of oral languages such as Signed Exact English (SEE) and mixes such as Pidgin Signed English (PSE). Sign language is commonly used as the main form of communication for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing, but sign languages also have a lot to offer for everyone. Check out this list of why sign languages are awesome!

    1. Important for Deaf people

Of course we can’t ignore the most obvious reason why sign languages are awesome. Sign languages are an extremely important communication tool for many deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Sign languages are the native languages of the Deaf community and provide full access to communication. Although sign languages are used primarily by people who are deaf, they are also used by others, such as people who can hear but can’t speak.

    2. More expressive

Sign languages aren’t just about the hands, they're also about the movement of a person’s arms, body and facial expressions. Facial expressions in sign languages can express both emotion and grammatical information. For instance, eyebrows can be raised and lowered to change the structure of a sentence from a statement to a question. So if you’re ever using sign language, make sure your facial expressions are correct or you could be saying something completely different to what you mean. Plus, with all the extra movement that goes into it, anyone who speaks a sign language is probably burning a few calories every time they talk.

    3. Listening with your eyes

People who know a sign language are often much better listeners. When using a sign language, a person must engage in constant eye contact with the person who is speaking. Unlike spoken language, with sign languages a person cannot look away from the person speaking and continue to listen. This can be an extremely beneficial habit to have for spoken language as well as sign language. By maintaining eye contact in spoken language, it shows that a person is genuinely interested in what the other is saying.

    4. Helpful for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Some children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) struggle developing verbal communication. Learning a sign language can be a helpful communication tool for some children with ASD. Many children with ASD have demonstrated higher quality communication when using a sign language instead of or in addition to a spoken language.

    5. Having a private conversation in a public place

This will only work if the conversation can’t be seen by someone who knows a sign language. Sign languages can be a great way to gossip without anyone else knowing, and passing on confidential information. We know more than a few kids who learned a bit of sign language with their friends so they could talk in class without their teachers knowing!

    6. Children can acquire sign language the very same way they acquire spoken language

For a child, the stages of acquiring a sign language are the same as those for spoken language. The muscles in a baby’s hands grow and develop faster than their mouths so signing can be a better option for early communication, especially when the child still can’t speak. If a baby’s first language is a sign language, they will often start “babbling” with their hands rather than their mouth.

    7. Advantages over spoken languages

Sign languages can be used when the spoken word is physically impossible, such as talking underwater, talking through glass, from a distance, at a loud music concert, and talking with your mouth full. Sign languages can also let you talk to someone without interrupting others with noise. You can tell your friend how much you hate the movie while in the cinema without disturbing anyone.

From face coverings to dodgy live captions; communication for the deaf and hearing loss communities has been hit hard.

Join RNID this Deaf Awareness Week as they reveal an exciting new online tool to help you advocate for your unique communication needs - that can also be used to raise deaf awareness.

They will also be talking to RNID Ambassador, Samantha Baines, about her experience over the past year (the good and bad!) as a person with hearing loss, and how she would use their new communication card when she's out and about.

This free event will be a pre-recorded session that we'll push out live, so we can make sure the captions are perfect. It will also be accessible via a BSL/English interpreter.

Next week is Mental Health Awareness week and one of the ways you can help raise awareness for better mental health is to join us for the Carry the Burden campaign, which represents the invisible burden that people with mental health difficulties carry every single day.

Taking part is easy, simply select an item of your choosing to carry for a full 24hrs, fundraise or donate and share on social media using the #CarryTheBurden

Start the day posting a selfie with your object on social media, to let people know that you are “Carrying the Burden to support Mind BLMK because…”

Share your updates throughout the day, using the hashtag #CarrytheBurden and finish your day with your final update, making a donation to Mind BLMK, then why not nominate 3 friends to take part in the challenge this May.

    Stuck for what to carry?
Perhaps you have a giant teddy bear? An orange teapot? An exercise ball? or perhaps a tin of beans?! Maybe it’s something that means something to you about your mental health. Feel free to get creative with this.

    What is Carers Week?

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.https://www.carersweek.org/?cmp=voices

The National Diabetes Audit (NDA) is a major national clinical audit, which measures the effectiveness of diabetes healthcare against NICE Clinical Guidelines and NICE Quality Standards, in England and Wales.

The NDA is delivered by NHS Digital, in partnership with Diabetes UK. It collects and analyses data and produces reports for a range of stakeholders to use to drive changes and improve the quality of services and health outcomes for people with diabetes

The Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP)

The  HQIP aims to improve health outcomes by enabling those who commission, deliver and receive healthcare to measure and improve our healthcare services

It is preparing a new specification and package of work for the NDA programme and wants to hear from people who receive care, including people affected by diabetes, their families and carers as well as from Health Care Professionals

In order to meaningfully engage with people affected by diabetes, HQIP  are holding focus groups in June to talk about the NDA and for people to share their views on the areas of diabetes care that are important to them.

The dates and times will be:

    Monday 7th June – 2-4pm

    Thursday 17th June – 10am-Midday

If you are interested in participating in a focus group please email Kim Rezel, contact details below.

On Tuesday 8 June, join us for a conversation this Carers Week with bestselling writer Kate Mosse Author . Her new book, An Extra Pair of Hands, is based on her own experience of becoming a carer in middle age.

In the session, Kate will read short extracts from the book and share her experience of helping her mother look after her father through Parkinson's, then supporting her mother in widowhood, and finally as 'an extra pair of hands' for her 90-year-old mother-in-law. The audience will then have the opportunity to ask Kate any questions in a short Q&A.

Have you experienced visual hallucinations, known as Charles Bonnet Syndome? Macular Society

New guidance for age-related macular degeneration services across the UK, recommends all patients with visual impairments are made aware of the condition, upon diagnosis.

The guidance, which has been developed by the The Royal College of Ophthalmologists , with input from the Macular Society, also highlights the need to ensure a patient-focused approach is taken when designing future services, especially as new ways of delivering care, such as virtual eye clinics, are considered.

You can find out more about what the guidance means for you at our next Virtual Clinic event on Tuesday (17 August) at 7pm. Register now: Macular Society Event

One of our priorities is to champion those who are marginalised when trying to access health care in MK.

Citizens Advice MK is working with Traverse, an independent research consultancy, to conduct research with people living in the UK who have no recourse to public funds (NRPF).

This research will be used by Citizens Advice to inform their campaign to end the no recourse to public funds policy. They are looking for ten people to take part in a series of workshops. To take part the people need to:

Be currently subject to the No Recourse to Public Funds visa condition OR have had the NRPF condition lifted in the past two years

Have been detrimentally affected by the NRPF condition. This criteria is intentionally broad because they’re interested in speaking to people with a range of experiences.

Be on either a family or work visa

Be able to participate in an online workshop in English. Migrants with English as a second language are we come to apply but Citizens Advice cannot provide interpreters.

Should someone need a little support with English or the technology needed to take part, they can support up to 5 participants attending with a friend or family member.  Be comfortable talking in a group environment with other people who they do not know. This conversation will involve them sharing their experiences of no recourse to public funds.

The three workshops will happen online on these dates:

    Workshop 1: Thursday 16th September 1pm - 2.30pm

    Workshop 2: Tuesday 21st September 10am - 11.30am

    Workshop 3: Tuesday 5th October 11am - 12.30pm

Participants will need to be able to attend all three dates to take part. For more information please contact: NRPF@traverse.ltd Or http://chibwe.mushibwe@mkcab.org.uk

Each person will receive a total of £150.00 for taking part in the three workshops. This can be provided via bank transfer or high street shopping voucher. The results of the research will be used by Citizens Advice to develop their strategy to influence the government to address and alleviate areas of harm caused by NRPF, with a view to scrapping the scheme entirely.

Coming to a meeting - What you need to know So that we can keep everyone who attends our local group meeting as safe as possible, please follow the important guidance below. If you have any questions, please let us know. If you have any COVID symptoms (including those of any variants), have had a recent positive test for COVID, or are living with someone who has been asked to self-isolate due to a positive test result, please do not come to the meeting and follow government advice. We would encourage you to scan into the meeting using the NHS app and any QR codes that are at our meeting venue. If you wish to wear a mask during the meeting, please do so. We may have a supply of disposable face masks and some hand sanitiser at the venue, but would encourage you to bring these items with you. We know that wearing masks keeps people safe but doing so is your own personal choice. The room may or may not be set up with any distancing between seats as standard. We recognise that individuals may prefer some space between them and so we will accommodate this where possible. Please ensure that you follow the current government guidance in your local area as these may change from region to region. We have done as much as possible to make our meetings a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, but we know that people’s attitudes to risk and personal choice will be different. We won’t be asking for people’s COVID vaccination status as part of attending any meetings. If you have previously been identified as Clinically Extremely Vulnerable (CEV) you may wish to take all of this into consideration when thinking about attending a meeting. FB_IMG_1631198765623

What happens to our eyes as we age? And, why does macular degeneration occur? These are questions Professor Luminita Paraoan is hoping to answer, by conducting vital molecular research. Luminita and her team at the University of Liverpool have been looking deep inside the eye to see what happens as macular disease develops.

This month she will share the latest findings from her most recent research project at Macular Society's Virtual Clinic. The project, which was funded by the Macular Society, looked at particular proteins at the back of the eye and the role they play in the progression of the disease.

The funding enabled researchers to look closely at the changes occurring in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells. One of the main jobs of the RPE is producing, degrading and transporting proteins that are essential for our vision. If the RPE cells die or get damaged it can cause photoreceptors to die, which is what leads to sight loss.

“The RPE ensures these proteins are available in the correct amount, at the appropriate time and at the required location,” said Luminita.

“Relatively small changes are enough to compromise these finely tuned processes.” By understanding how these changes occur, researchers like Luminita can develop targeted treatments.

The Virtual Clinic will take place at its usual time of 7pm on Tuesday 16 November (the third Tuesday of the month).
